President Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to investigate major tech giants like Meta, Google, and X over allegations of exploiting Nigerian media content without fair compensation.

The move follows a joint petition by Nigerian media organizations including the Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO), which argued that these platforms are undermining the commercial viability of local publishers.The FCCPC will examine claims of anti-competitive practices, market dominance, and unauthorized use of copyrighted news content for AI training.Executive Vice Chairman Tunji Bello emphasized the investigation is evidence-based and not a presumption of guilt.The probe aims to ensure fair competition in Nigeria's digital ecosystem while protecting the rights of media outlets.

This action places Nigeria among nations seeking to redefine tech companies' relationships with news publishers, addressing concerns about digital platforms profiting from journalism without adequate compensation.
