Tinubu urges diaspora doctors to collaborate on Nigeria's health reforms

President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to institutionalise a permanent framework for engaging Nigerian medical professionals abroad, as the National Assembly pledges legislative support for the Diaspora Health Impact Initiative (DHII).

The initiative aims to harness the expertise of overseas doctors, nurses, researchers, and public health experts to address Nigeria's persistent healthcare challenges.

During the 2026 National Diaspora Day celebration, Tinubu highlighted the critical role of the diaspora in rebuilding the country's healthcare system, promising institutional mechanisms to leverage their skills and investments. He praised organisations like NiDCOM and the DHII for mobilising global Nigerian healthcare professionals to support local healthcare delivery.

Challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, skilled personnel shortages, and policy inconsistencies were acknowledged, with calls for expanded diaspora medical missions, telemedicine services, and knowledge-transfer partnerships.

Tinubu also urged the diaspora to contribute to vaccine research and healthcare infrastructure, framing their migration as an opportunity for 'brain gain' rather than brain drain.

Lawmakers and health officials reiterated commitments to legislative support, mentorship programs, and collaborations to strengthen Nigeria's health system.
