Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly attacked by a mob during a visit to Sonarpur in West Bengal on Saturday.He had gone to meet the family of a party worker, Sanju Karmakar, who was reportedly killed in post-poll violence.According to reports, the mob hurled eggs and stones at him and raised slogans such as “chor, chor” (thief, thief).Videos circulating on social media showed Banerjee wearing a helmet while being escorted amid the chaos.

The TMC has alleged that Bharatiya Janata Party workers were behind the attack, while the BJP has denied such involvement and called for a proper police investigation.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly condemned the incident, accusing the opposition of violent politics and stating that “rulers became killers,” in a sharp social media response targeting the BJP.

Abhishek Banerjee himself claimed that the attackers intended to kill him and said he would not abandon the bereaved family despite the situation, reportedly stating, “Let them kill me” while expressing resolve to stay with the victim’s family.After spending more than 90 minutes at the residence, he was escorted out by central forces and local police personnel.

He also alleged that adequate police protection was not present at the site and indicated that he would approach the Calcutta High Court over the matter.

The BJP’s state leadership responded by urging police action and rejecting allegations of involvement, while also accusing the ruling party of promoting a culture of political violence.

Opposition leaders such as Mallikarjun Kharge and Akhilesh Yadav suggested that the incident reflected political conspiracy and failure of law and order in the state.
