West Bengal CM launches industrial policy reforms to boost manufacturing
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) strongly criticised the deployment of security personnel outside the residence of former West Bengal Chief Minister and party chief Mamata Banerjee ahead of her planned visit to Baruipur in South 24 Parganas, where a 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered. The additional security arrangements prompted senior TMC leaders to accuse the authorities of attempting to restrict Banerjee's movement.
TMC MP Dola Sen questioned whether Banerjee was effectively being placed under house arrest and described the situation as a 'super emergency', arguing that the heavy police presence was unjustified and would not prevent the party leader from meeting people.
Senior TMC leader Madan Mitra also criticised the police action, stating that Banerjee was only meeting party workers and insisting that justice should be ensured in the Baruipur case, similar to the demands made in other high-profile crimes in the state.
Meanwhile, TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee used the incident to attack the BJP, alleging that the party had failed to fulfil its promises of ensuring women's safety.
In social media posts, he claimed that political influence appeared to be affecting the pursuit of justice and criticised what he described as selective outrage over crimes against women.
The controversy unfolded against the backdrop of public anger over the alleged murder of the minor girl, with political parties exchanging accusations over law and order, policing, and accountability while the investigation into the crime continued.
