A tragic dormitory fire broke out at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, in the early hours of Thursday, May 28 at around 2 am, leaving the school community and the nation in shock.Reports indicate that at least 16 students lost their lives in the inferno, while several others sustained injuries.

The incident triggered panic among parents and guardians, many of whom rushed to the school upon hearing the news, hoping to find their children safe.According to reports, about 808 learners were in the school at the time of the incident.Among those affected emotionally by the tragedy was philanthropist Ndungu Nyoro, who sponsors two students at the institution.Nyoro publicly shared that he had managed to contact the two girls, both of whom confirmed they were safe.He explained that one of the students had been in the dormitory block that caught fire, while the other was in a different block.

Despite their safety, both students were reported to be deeply shaken by the incident and had spent hours in open spaces without food following the fire.Nyoro also noted communication challenges faced by guardians, with some parents initially unaware of the situation until they were contacted.

He expressed concern for the emotional wellbeing of the entire school community, calling for counselling services for students, teachers, and parents affected by the tragedy.The fire left many families distressed, with some still searching for their children in the aftermath.Authorities and well-wishers continue to respond to the incident as investigations and support efforts continue.
