Tripura Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman has once again called for a judicial inquiry, to be conducted by a sitting High Court judge, into the death of Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar.Dhankar was found dead at the state police headquarters in Agartala on July 20 under circumstances that have raised questions from the opposition.

Addressing a press conference in Agartala, Roy Barman said the Congress had demanded a judicial probe from the very beginning because of the nature of the incident and the unanswered questions surrounding the officer's death.

He claimed that when the body was seen at the morgue, there were no visible external injuries typically associated with such cases, leading the party to believe that a police investigation alone would not adequately address public concerns.The Tripura government has constituted a three-member investigation team headed by West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak.

However, Roy Barman described this inquiry as an 'eyewash' and argued that a team led by an SP-rank officer would not inspire public confidence.

He also alleged that the DGP, whom he described as an honest officer, had faced difficulties over certain issues shortly before his death, although no evidence was presented to substantiate that claim.

The Congress MLA further criticised the Tripura High Court for not taking suo motu cognisance of the matter, saying the judiciary should intervene in cases that generate widespread public concern.Anurag Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre and a native of Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat, became the state's DGP in May 2025.

He had previously supervised major CBI investigations, including the Punjab National Bank fraud case involving Nirav Modi and the reinvestigation into the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.The circumstances of his death remain under official investigation.
