Trump Administration's DOJ Approves Paramount Skydance Acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery Amid Staff Disagreements

The Trump administration's Department of Justice approved Paramount Skydance's proposed $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros.Discovery, a major media merger that includes CNN.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, career antitrust lawyers in the DOJ were initially leaning toward challenging the deal due to potential impacts on competition and consumers. However, senior leaders closed the investigation last Friday, stating the transaction would be 'good for competition.

' Staffers reportedly did not participate in drafting the final statement, which some believe was intended to deter state attorneys general from pursuing legal challenges. The decision has drawn sharp criticism from Democrats and antitrust experts.Rep.Pramila Jayapal called it corruption influenced by corporate lobbying that could harm the economy and consumers, urging states to challenge it.Antitrust lawyer Lee Hepner described political interference in the review process as 'unreal.' Former FTC commissioner Alvaro Bedoya and others labeled the approval as crony capitalism disconnected from facts and law.One official who signed off on the deal reportedly resigned immediately afterward. The merger combines major film studios and news outlets, raising concerns about reduced competition in entertainment and media.

Multiple mainstream outlets including Politico, NPR, CNN, The Guardian, and The New York Times have confirmed the DOJ's approval of the deal without requiring divestitures or concessions. While federal clearance is a significant step, state-level challenges and international regulators may still pose hurdles. The story highlights ongoing debates about political influence in antitrust enforcement during the current administration.

The Deep State always tries to paint Trump as the bad guy. This merger is about competition, folks! Those career lawyers are just Dems whining because they can't control the narrative. CNN’s gonna get a much-needed makeover, that's for sure. Bet they're sweating bullets.
