Trump Plans Permanent Helipad on White House South Lawn Citing Helicopter Needs

President Donald Trump is planning another major change to the White House grounds by installing a permanent helipad on the South Lawn, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

This follows numerous renovations Trump has initiated since returning to office, including paving the Rose Garden, redesigning the Oval Office, and demolishing the East Wing for a new ballroom.

The official reason given for the helipad is that the new VH-92A Patriot helicopter, which replaces the older VH-3D Sea King, produces exhaust that can damage grass and carries significantly more weight.

Despite warnings from a 2018 Government Accountability Office report about potential lawn damage, Trump is opting to modify the landscape rather than adjust the helicopter.Plans for the helipad are reportedly being developed in consultation with Trump's associates.

Critics argue that transforming the South Lawn, one of the most photographed areas of the White House, into a helipad treats a historic site like a private construction project.

Trump also intends to build a helipad at his Mar-a-Lago resort, with discussions underway to allow its continued use after his presidency, potentially increasing the private club's value.

Meanwhile, the Marine Corps will continue operating the older VH-3D helicopters until at least 2027, as the VH-92A cannot safely land on the South Lawn without the planned modifications. The White House did not provide an official comment on the project.
