UDOM Lecturer Detained Over Alleged Demonstration Encouragement, University Unaware

The Dodoma Regional Police have confirmed the detention of University of Dodoma (UDOM) lecturer Melkisedeki Kaijage, who is currently in custody pending investigations into allegations of encouraging planned demonstrations on July 7, 2026.Police Commander Gallus Hyera stated that while investigations are ongoing, details cannot be disclosed at this stage.

The arrest was first reported by the UDOM Academic Staff Association (UDOMASA), which claimed Kaijage was summoned to the police station on July 8 and accused of inciting the demonstrations through his writings.

Despite efforts to secure bail, the university association failed to get his release and filed a legal case at the High Court of Tanzania, scheduled for mention on July 21.

UDOMASA chairman Dr Gerald Shija emphasized the need to uncover whether the charges are solely about demonstration encouragement or if other issues are involved.

University officials, including Vice Chancellor Prof Lughano Kusiluka and Head of Communications Rose Mdami, denied having information about the detention, citing their absence from campus during the incident.
