UK Airports Introduce Drop-Off Fees for Drivers

A new report has revealed that over three-quarters of UK airports have raised or introduced drop-off fees for drivers, with Gatwick and Stansted charging the highest rates at £10 for 10 minutes.

The research by the RAC highlights that these fees, which are levied for dropping off passengers close to the terminal, have increased by an average of a third compared to last summer.Edinburgh and Bristol follow with £8.50 for 10 minutes, while London City Airport now charges £8 for five minutes.

The move has drawn criticism from transport advocates, who argue that such fees are at odds with global practices, as major airports in the EU and worldwide do not impose similar charges. The RAC's Rod Dennis condemned the practice, stating that airports should not exploit their captive audience with 'farewell fees.' Meanwhile, industry representatives defended the charges as necessary for managing congestion and supporting airport operations.

The article also notes that free drop-off zones are available but require bus transfers, and warns drivers about potential parking charge notices for unattended vehicles. The changes come as UK airports prepare for the summer rush, implementing new e-gate access for children aged eight and nine.
