The UK's driest regions are facing escalating drought conditions as a new heatwave looms, with southern and central areas experiencing record temperatures and prolonged dry spells.

Parts of Wales have officially entered drought status, while sections of southern, central, and eastern England remain in 'prolonged dry weather'—the final stage before drought is declared.

The upcoming heatwave is expected to push temperatures in south-east England to 35°C (95°F), prompting heat health alerts from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).These alerts cover regions including London, the East of England, and the Midlands, warning of potential health risks for vulnerable populations.

Despite some rainfall in the north and west over the weekend, the driest areas—such as central, southern, and eastern England—have seen negligible precipitation, exacerbating low soil moisture levels.Wisley in Surrey, for instance, has recorded 39 days without rain, with July rainfall totals below 2% of the average.

The UKHSA cautions that the extreme heat could strain healthcare services and increase mortality risks for the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.

While the current heatwave is anticipated to be shorter than previous summer events, the persistent lack of rain in key regions raises concerns about long-term water security and agricultural impacts.
