The UK is set to experience a brief respite from the ongoing heatwave as cooler temperatures arrive in parts of the country.However, the prolonged dry spell is expected to persist, with significant implications for regions already facing water shortages.

The Met Office reports that northerly winds are introducing fresher air to northern and eastern Scotland, as well as eastern England, where temperatures may drop by approximately 5°C compared to last week.

Despite this cooling trend, southern England and south Wales could see heatwave conditions re-emerge later this week, with Bournemouth already recording over 15 consecutive days above its heatwave threshold of 26°C.

The dry spell has been particularly severe in eastern and north-eastern England, where rainfall has fallen to around half the expected amount for this stage of the summer.Wisley in Surrey has experienced 31 consecutive dry days, marking the longest such period in central England in 30 years.

While high pressure systems will dominate the weather for the next week, bringing minimal rainfall, north-west Scotland may see up to 30mm of rain through frontal systems.

Scientists emphasize that human-induced climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of heatwaves, with the UK warming by approximately 0.25°C per decade since the 1980s.This trend underscores the growing challenge of managing water resources and adapting to extreme weather patterns in a changing climate.
