UK Faces Prolonged Heatwave with Health Alerts and High Temperatures
The UK is experiencing its third heatwave of the year, with temperatures expected to reach 35°C (95°F) as the weather pattern spreads further north and west.
This prolonged period of high temperatures, driven by a persistent high-pressure system, has already seen record-breaking readings in parts of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. On Wednesday, Heathrow Airport recorded 33.8°C, while Cardiff Bute Park reached 31.2°C.The heatwave is expected to peak on Thursday and Friday, with temperatures climbing into the high 20s or low 30s across more regions. While this event will not break temperature records compared to June's heatwave, its longevity makes it particularly notable.
Health authorities have issued amber and yellow heat health alerts for parts of England and Wales, warning of increased risks to vulnerable populations, including older adults and those with pre-existing conditions.
The National Fire Chiefs Council has also raised concerns about wildfire risks due to dry conditions, advising caution with outdoor activities like barbecues.Meteorologists predict the heatwave could last for up to 10 days, potentially rivaling the prolonged drought of 1976.
With above-average temperatures expected throughout July and August, experts warn that the UK is entering a summer marked by frequent heatwaves, consistent with climate change trends.
