Ukraine is pursuing a 30-year strategic energy agreement with Canada, focusing on LNG supply and an 'energy security bridge,' according to Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal.

The proposal, discussed with Canadian Energy Minister Tim Hodgson, follows prior agreements between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

A $650 million grant from Canada was also discussed to help Ukraine purchase gas for the upcoming winter, addressing ongoing challenges from Russian strikes on energy infrastructure.

Ukraine’s energy and heating systems remain vulnerable to attacks, prompting calls for Canadian suppliers to store gas in Ukrainian facilities and provide energy equipment.The ministers also explored cooperation on small modular reactors (SMRs), a technology Canada is advancing.Zelenskyy’s government overhaul emphasized winter preparedness, with Sergii Koretskyi, CEO of Naftogaz Ukrainy, appointed as prime minister.The agreement aims to strengthen long-term energy security amid the fifth year of the war.
