US and Iran continue slow negotiations over Strait of Hormuz and nuclear program

US President Donald Trump has stated that his administration will not rush negotiations with Iran over a possible peace agreement aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Although Trump had previously claimed that both sides had largely negotiated a memorandum of understanding, the White House later clarified that several major issues remain unresolved.

The conflict, which began in late February between the US, Israel and Iran, has disrupted global energy markets and raised tensions across the region.Trump confirmed that the US naval blockade around the Strait of Hormuz will remain in place until a formal agreement is signed and verified. The strategic waterway is critical for global oil and liquefied natural gas exports.

A fragile ceasefire has reportedly been in effect since April, but negotiations continue over sensitive matters including Iran’s nuclear activities, sanctions relief, and access to frozen Iranian financial assets.

According to a senior US administration official, Iran has agreed in principle to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and discuss the disposal of its highly enriched uranium stockpile. In exchange, the US could consider easing its naval blockade and potentially lifting some sanctions. However, officials admitted that practical and technical details still need to be negotiated.Iran has denied accusations that it seeks nuclear weapons, insisting its uranium enrichment program is for civilian energy purposes.Nonetheless, Western governments remain concerned because the enrichment levels exceed those typically required for power generation.Iranian-linked media also reported that the US continues to resist some Iranian demands, particularly regarding frozen overseas funds.

The negotiations remain delicate, with uncertainty over implementation timelines and broader regional security issues, including Iran’s relationship with Hezbollah and Israel’s military operations in Lebanon.
