CCTV footage and witness accounts help police identify suspects in Utumishi Girls School dormitory fire investigation
A tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Nakuru County has left the country in shock after 16 students lost their lives in a dormitory blaze suspected to be arson.According to preliminary investigations, the fire was allegedly started by around eight students who are currently in custody awaiting arraignment.
Reports indicate that mattresses were used to set the dormitory on fire shortly after midnight on Thursday, May 28, causing rapid spread of flames and heavy smoke inside the building.Authorities confirmed that 10 of the students died as a result of suffocation after inhaling toxic smoke, while others were burnt beyond recognition.The severity of the fire has made identification difficult, with six bodies reportedly completely charred.
Pathologists have begun DNA testing to assist in identifying the remaining victims, noting that the process may take time due to the extent of the damage.Families of the victims have been left devastated, with many experiencing emotional distress during identification at the Naivasha Funeral Home.
Some parents expressed forgiveness towards the suspects while urging students across the country to avoid destructive behaviour such as arson in schools.
Government officials, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, have called for national reflection and prayers, highlighting concerns over rising psychological and social pressures among students.Leaders have also demanded accountability and swift prosecution of those responsible.The incident has reignited debate on school safety and student mental health support across the country.
