Cebu school increases security measures following reported shooting threat
In response to the recent school shooting in Tacloban City that killed three students and wounded 20 others, school principals in Valenzuela City have suggested requiring students to use transparent bags. This would make it easier for authorities to inspect belongings and prevent possible violence inside school campuses. The proposal came up during an emergency meeting called by Valenzuela Mayor Wes Gatchalian with various stakeholders.
Attendees included officials from the Department of Education, Philippine National Police, public and private schools, local government offices, and parents.
Other security measures discussed were tighter school security protocols, installation of more CCTV cameras, regular emergency and lockdown drills, and expanded counseling and psychosocial support for students.
The meeting also focused on early intervention for those needing mental health help and better coordination among schools, police, barangays, and the city government.
Mayor Gatchalian emphasized the important role of parents and the community in guiding young people and fighting against bullying, violence, and gang influences. The Tacloban incident has raised concerns nationwide about school safety, prompting local governments like Valenzuela to act quickly.
These steps aim to create a safer learning environment while addressing the root causes of youth violence through support services and community involvement. The initiative reflects a proactive approach to prevent similar tragedies and ensure the well-being of students across the city.
