OCTA survey shows strong public support for holding impeachment trial for Sara Duterte
The scheduled visit of Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary To Lam to the Philippine Senate on Monday, June 1, was canceled, according to a report from the Senate’s Office of International Relations and Protocol.
The Senate confirmed that the Vietnamese government itself called off the planned visit, including a separate scheduled meeting between To Lam and Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano. No official explanation has been provided by Vietnamese authorities regarding the cancellation. In preparation for the high-level diplomatic engagement, the Senate had earlier adjusted its schedule, moving its Monday plenary session from 3 p.m.to 5 p.m.However, following the cancellation notice, there was no immediate advisory on whether the original session schedule would be restored. The uncertainty created some procedural adjustments within the chamber as it awaited further instructions.
Despite the cancellation of the Senate engagement, President To Lam had already arrived in Manila on Sunday for a two-day state visit to the Philippines from May 31 to June 1, 2026.
This visit was notable as it marked the first state visit to the country by Vietnam’s top party leader, underscoring growing diplomatic ties between Manila and Hanoi.During the same period, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.was hosting bilateral talks with To Lam in Malacañang.
The report also noted other developments in the Philippine political scene, including ongoing discussions related to the impeachment proceedings involving Vice President Sara Duterte, for which the Senate was expecting her camp’s formal response to the Articles of Impeachment. Her legal team had not yet confirmed whether they would file their response personally or submit it electronically before the deadline. The cancellation of the Senate visit thus occurred amid a busy and politically sensitive week in the Philippine legislature.
