Vihiga Community Mourns Elderly Man Who Died Shortly After Receiving New Home Support

Residents of Gavalagi village in South Maragoli, Vihiga County, are mourning the death of Mzee Alex Ombeva, an elderly man whose difficult living conditions had recently moved well-wishers to help him.

The elderly man, popularly known as “Chopeto,” passed away only a few days after members of the community and online supporters came together to construct a better home for him.

The initiative was led by Presenter Olive Keverenge alongside other supporters who mobilised building materials and resources after photos and stories about the old man’s poor housing conditions circulated online.

Construction work had already started, giving hope that Mzee Ombeva would finally spend his remaining days in a safer and more comfortable environment.

According to reports shared by those close to the project, the elderly man died early in the morning inside the newly built house shortly after prayers and blessings had been conducted. The news deeply shocked villagers and supporters who had been celebrating the community effort.

Olive Keverenge publicly expressed grief, saying the death had left many heartbroken because help had arrived just before the old man could fully enjoy the kindness shown to him.Community members described Mzee Ombeva as humble, grateful, and peaceful during the entire process. Many residents said the project had united the village and restored dignity to a man who had struggled for years.

Although his death has turned the hopeful project into a moment of sorrow, locals say the compassion shown towards him will continue to inspire others to support vulnerable people in society.
