Bafana Bafana to travel to the US for FIFA World Cup after visa issues cleared
Bafana Bafana’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026 have been thrown into disarray after visa complications prevented the team from travelling to Mexico as scheduled.
The squad had been due to depart from OR Tambo International Airport on a chartered flight early on Sunday, but the journey was abruptly postponed when it emerged that visas for some players and officials had not been secured in time.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) confirmed that an emergency committee meeting was held on Saturday night following the disruption to travel plans.
According to SAFA, efforts are underway to resolve the issue as quickly as possible so that the team can still travel to Mexico City ahead of their opening group match against hosts Mexico on 11 June 2026 at the iconic Estadio Azteca. While logistical challenges continue, the team remains in Johannesburg, where they will continue training until departure arrangements are finalised.
SAFA has reassured supporters that it is working “around the clock” to ensure that preparations for the tournament remain on track despite the setback.
The incident has sparked strong criticism from South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, who described the situation as embarrassing and unfair to both players and coaching staff. He has called for a formal report and accountability from those responsible for the administrative failure.Meanwhile, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) has stepped in to assist with resolving the visa complications.
With Mexico, the United States, and Canada co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the delay adds unnecessary pressure on Bafana Bafana’s build-up to a crucial international fixture.
