Western Cape Launches New Psychiatric Unit to Enhance Mental Health Care

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness has officially opened a new 30-bed Acute Psychiatric Unit (APU) at Eerste River Hospital, marking a significant step in expanding mental health infrastructure.

The R86 million facility, designed as a therapeutic environment with natural light, dual courtyards, and patient-centric layouts, aims to provide specialized care for those experiencing mental health crises.

Provincial Minister Mireille Wenger emphasized the importance of timely, dignified treatment, stating that every individual in need deserves access to appropriate care. The unit separates patient areas from operational zones to ensure uninterrupted care and safety.

Minister Tertius Simmers highlighted the facility's role in improving hospital capacity for vulnerable patients, noting its focus on safety, dignity, and efficient clinical workflows. This APU is the first of three planned for 2026, with additional units at Khayelitsha and New Somerset Hospitals set to add 90 beds.

The project reflects the province's commitment to addressing rising demand for psychiatric services while fostering a healing environment for patients and staff alike.
