Mick Jagger praises Sam Fender’s music and discusses younger artists he has been listening to
Manchester indie band Westside Cowboy have released their latest single ‘Pin Up Boys’, offering another preview of their forthcoming debut album ‘It Goes On’, due for release on 21 August via Island Records. The track follows their previous single ‘Kick Stones (The Boys)’, which introduced the record with a bold, ’70s-influenced rock sound.
‘Pin Up Boys’ continues the band’s approach of blending classic guitar-driven influences with a modern indie aesthetic, beginning with stripped-back vocals from Reuben Haycocks before building into a dynamic, quiet-loud anthem.
The band described the song as one of the oldest on the album, originally written around a year and a half ago using an acoustic guitar, a drum machine sample pad, and unconventional percussion such as screwdrivers used as drumsticks.
They noted that it had become a staple of their live performances, which influenced their decision to record a version that closely reflects their stage sound.
The album was produced by Loren Humphrey, known for his work with artists including Geese, Cameron Winter, and Wunderhorse, and was recorded at Greenmount Studios in Leeds.Alongside the single, Westside Cowboy have announced a series of record store live performances to coincide with the album launch period.
These include shows in Brighton (Resident, 19 August), London (Rough Trade East, 20 August), Leeds (Jumbo, 25 August), Liverpool (Rough Trade, 27 August), Nottingham (Rough Trade, 3 September), and Glasgow (Assai, 4 September). The band are also continuing their wider UK and European tour schedule.
Speaking previously about their creative approach, vocalist and guitarist Reuben Haycocks highlighted the group’s emphasis on fun and reduced pressure in songwriting, which they feel has helped them develop a more authentic sound.
