Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi named Newsmaker of the Year, calls for stronger anti-corruption drive
US President Donald Trump remains in excellent overall health and is fully capable of carrying out the duties of president, according to a medical memo released by the White House on 30 May 2026.
The assessment was provided by Dr Sean Barbabella following Trump's medical examination at Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre earlier in the week.
The report noted that Trump, who is 79 years old and will turn 80 in June, continues to experience slight swelling in his lower legs, although the condition has reportedly improved compared with the previous year.
The memo also addressed bruising on his hands, describing it as a common and benign issue linked to frequent handshaking and the use of low-dose aspirin for cardiovascular prevention.
According to the physician, Trump's cardiac function remains normal and examinations showed strong pulmonary, neurological and overall physical health.A comprehensive neurological assessment reportedly found normal mental status and included screenings for conditions such as depression and anxiety.
The president's visit to Walter Reed attracted public attention because previous photographs had shown swollen ankles, bruised hands and a discoloured area on his neck.
While the latest medical update discussed the leg swelling and hand bruising, it did not explain the neck treatment that Trump reportedly received in March, nor did it mention any new MRI examination.
The memo also included preventative health recommendations, such as maintaining a healthy diet, increasing physical activity, continuing weight-loss efforts and taking low-dose aspirin.Trump was listed as being 190 cm tall and weighing 108 kg.The report concludes that he remains physically fit to serve as commander-in-chief and head of state.
