Indian activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike since June 28 to protest alleged irregularities and question paper leaks in a major university entrance examination, was shifted to a government hospital after police cited a court order and concerns over his worsening health.

Wangchuk has been demanding the resignation of India's education minister following the examination scandal that forced more than two million students to retake the test.His wife, Gitanjali J.

Angmo, has strongly criticised the authorities, alleging that her husband is effectively under illegal detention rather than receiving genuine medical treatment.

She claimed that around 30 police personnel were deployed on their hospital floor, with more than 100 officers present throughout the hospital, severely restricting the family's movement.

Angmo also said the authorities refused her request to transfer Wangchuk to a private hospital and that she has approached the high court seeking permission for such a move.

The hospital, however, stated that Wangchuk has declined intravenous fluids, oral rehydration solutions and other recommended medical treatment despite repeated counselling by doctors and an independent medical expert.

The development comes just before the start of India's parliamentary session, with opposition parties expressing support for Wangchuk and the student-led protests in New Delhi.Several political organisations, farmers' groups and civil society activists have announced demonstrations during the parliamentary session.

The satirical Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) also announced an indefinite hunger strike in solidarity with Wangchuk and called for a protest march towards Parliament.

Hundreds of supporters gathered near the protest site carrying posters of Wangchuk and demanding accountability over the examination controversy, reflecting the continuing public anger over the exam leak and its impact on millions of students.
