A wildfire that forced the evacuation of Wrigley, N.W.T., has moved 4 kilometers closer to the town overnight, now just 7 kilometers away.While officials state the fire is not expected to reach the community, residents and essential workers remain in a state of heightened alert.The evacuation began on June 29, with the last remaining essential workers fleeing to Fort Smith on Saturday as the fire crossed protective lines.

Jamie Moses, chief of the Pehdzéh Kı̨ First Nation, remains in Wrigley, expressing concern over hot, dry conditions and strong north winds that could exacerbate the fire's spread.

Fire crews are implementing backburns and creating blacklines to protect the community, while a high-volume suppression system from Alberta is en route to bolster efforts.Despite preparations, fears persist about embers igniting spot fires and the potential need for further evacuations.The N.W.T.SPCA has also called for donations to support stranded dogs in the area.Fire officials emphasize that while the fire remains active, protective measures are in place to mitigate risks to the community.
