Witness Claims Police Evidence Tampered in Sibanyoni Shooting Case

A state witness in the Vusimusi 'Cat' Matlala trial has raised concerns about potential tampering with evidence related to the 2022 attempted murder of taxi magnate Joe 'Ferrari' Sibanyoni.

Security guard Bethwell Cele, testifying under cross-examination by defence attorney Adv Annelene van den Heever, disputed police records and highlighted discrepancies in crime scene sketches and typed statements.Cele alleged that omissions in official documents suggested an effort to conceal the truth about the attack outside Centurion Country Club Estate.

During the Johannesburg High Court proceedings, Cele claimed he fired at attackers in a BMW but faced scrutiny over inconsistencies between his account and police reports.

He argued the typed statement was not entirely his own and expressed frustration that key details like the Ferrari's presence and spent cartridges were omitted from official records.

Cele's allegations of a cover-up intensified as he demanded clarification on the crime scene sketch, which excluded critical elements of the incident. The court will continue hearings with a new witness set to testify on Friday.
