World Bank Funds $375.9m to Modernize Pakistan's Power Grid and Boost Renewable Energy

The World Bank has approved $375.9 million in financing for Pakistan's Grid Stability Enhancement Project under the BEST-PAK Multiphase Programmatic Approach.

This initiative aims to modernize Pakistan's electricity transmission network, reduce power outages, and integrate more clean energy into the grid.

The project will install advanced equipment to stabilize the transmission grid, enabling the full utilization of 1,840MW of wind capacity in southern Pakistan and supporting 491MW of planned renewable energy projects.

It is expected to avoid 832,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, contributing to Pakistan's goal of achieving 60% renewable energy in its electricity mix by 2030.

The project also addresses climate risks by incorporating climate-resilient specifications, such as elevated platforms to mitigate flood exposure and equipment designed for extreme temperatures.

This investment aligns with Pakistan's Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement and supports reforms to strengthen governance and operational performance in the power sector.
