World Bank Study Confirms Success of South Africa's Special Economic Zones Programme

A World Bank report has confirmed the success of South Africa's Special Economic Zones (SEZs) programme, which has generated R14.8 billion in revenue and created over 30,000 jobs.Minister Parks Tau welcomed the findings, stating that the programme demonstrates the country's capability to establish world-class SEZs.The study analysed data from all 12 SEZs, including interviews with stakeholders and comparisons with international case studies.

Tau emphasized the need to implement recommendations such as extending tax incentives, designating private-sector industrial parks, and formalizing service agreements.

Experts like PSG economist Johann Els highlighted South Africa's strong infrastructure and improving policy environment, while Efficient Group's Dawie Roodt noted the country's readiness for SEZ expansion.

The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition plans to host an international conference to attract investment, underscoring the programme's potential to drive economic growth and industrialisation.
