The Yurok Tribe has reclaimed 125 acres of ancestral land in Humboldt County, transforming a former lumber mill site into a tribally managed gateway to Redwood National and State Parks.

This restoration project, completed after years of collaboration with Save the Redwoods League and California Trout, aims to heal both the environment and Indigenous cultural heritage.The site, known as 'O Rew,' features restored riparian habitats, interpretive exhibits, and trails connecting to old-growth redwood groves.

The Yurok, who have reclaimed 60,000 acres of their 500,000-acre ancestral territory, emphasize the importance of reconnecting with their land for ecological and cultural renewal.

The project includes wetlands, ponds, and native vegetation to support salmon populations and wildlife, while also serving as a cultural hub with traditional Yurok designs.This initiative marks a significant step in the 'land back' movement, symbolizing both environmental restoration and Indigenous sovereignty.
