The Zambales province has officially added two new marine protected areas (MPAs) to its network, enhancing efforts to conserve marine biodiversity and promote sustainable fisheries.The Calanga Reef MPA in Iba and the Rabaw-ti-Bato MPA in San Narciso were included under ZAMPAN Resolution No.1, Series of 2026.These areas are ecologically significant as breeding, spawning, nursery, and feeding grounds for various marine species.Calanga Reef covers 40 hectares with nearly 49% live hard coral cover, while Rabaw-ti-Bato is historically a fish spawning ground.The MPAs will have core sanctuary zones designated as 'no-take' areas where fishing, gathering, and vessel access are prohibited.Buffer zones allow regulated activities like traditional fishing and recreational diving under strict guidelines.This expansion strengthens habitat connectivity, improves ecosystem resilience, and supports coordinated coastal resource management across 11 towns.ZAMPAN, established in 2013, involves multiple government agencies and local units to ensure effective marine conservation.
