The African Telecommunications Union (ATU) has officially appointed Zambia's Kezias Mwale as its new Secretary-General for the 2027–2030 term.Mwale won the election at the ATU plenipotentiary conference in Abuja with 21 out of 34 votes, defeating four other candidates.In his acceptance speech, he emphasized that his mandate is to serve all African nations equally, not any single country.

He highlighted Africa's pivotal role in digital transformation, stressing the need for universal broadband access, digital inclusion, cybersecurity, and collaboration with governments, private sectors, and civil society.

Mwale pledged to ensure no community, especially marginalized groups like children, women, and persons with disabilities, is left behind in Africa's digital journey.His priorities include expanding affordable internet, promoting innovation, and enhancing Africa's influence in global digital policy.

The outgoing Secretary-General, John Omo, noted the adoption of a declaration on meaningful connectivity, which outlines key areas like digital inclusion, infrastructure development, and regulatory harmonization.Mwale also commended other candidates and vowed to work with them to advance the Union's goals.The election underscores Africa's commitment to leveraging technology for economic growth and improved public services.
