Zamboanga Residents Fined for Power Theft

Six residents in Zamboanga City have been convicted by a local court for stealing electricity, according to a report by The Philippine Star.The Zamboanga City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 41 stated that Aldhazer Uding, Alrasid Ibnohasim, Basil Hamja, Abdurajak Pulalon, Adzhar Jumala, and Sattal Ababon from Barangay Mariki pleaded guilty to violating Republic Act 7832, which prohibits electricity theft.Each defendant was ordered to pay P20,000 to the Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative (Zamcelco).This marks Zamcelco's fourth successful prosecution against power thieves.

The case originated from a joint operation on May 20 involving the National Bureau of Investigation, Zamcelco officers, and other law enforcement agencies.

Zamcelco emphasized the importance of adhering to legal protocols to prevent unauthorized electricity use, which undermines infrastructure and fair access.The fines aim to deter future violations and ensure compliance with energy regulations.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenges of combating electricity theft in the region, prompting calls for stricter enforcement and community awareness.
