Community Support Helps Unemployed Nairobi Father and Newborn Baby After Street Appeal
Residents of Zimmerman in Nairobi County have taken matters into their own hands to repair a long-neglected road that had become almost impassable, especially during rainy seasons.
For years, the community had raised complaints about the poor condition of the road, but according to locals, little meaningful action was taken by the relevant authorities. The situation worsened over time, turning daily movement into a major struggle for schoolchildren, traders, and workers who depend on the route.During rainy periods, the road would turn into thick mud, making it extremely difficult to walk or transport goods.Children were among the most affected, with some having to walk through muddy paths just to reach school.
One schoolgirl highlighted the impact by explaining how her white socks would turn brown whenever it rained, reflecting the harsh conditions they faced daily.
Frustrated by years of delay and lack of intervention, residents, led by James Munene Thuku, decided to organise themselves and begin repairing the road using pooled resources and community labour.Neighbours joined forces, contributing both time and effort to restore the essential route that connects homes, schools, and local businesses. The initiative has grown beyond just infrastructure repair, becoming a symbol of unity, resilience, and community strength.Residents say the project demonstrates what ordinary citizens can achieve when they come together in the absence of timely government action. The effort continues to restore not only the road but also a sense of dignity and mobility within the neighbourhood.
