13-year-old charged over alleged school attack plot in Queensland

A 13-year-old boy from Maryborough, Queensland, has been charged after police allege he was involved in threatening behaviour and planning a possible attack on a local school.

The investigation began last week when police were called to a business on Saltwater Creek Road after reports that a person armed with a knife was making threats at the premises.

The teenager was taken into custody and charged with offences including entering a premises with intent, going armed so as to cause fear, and making threats.Following the initial arrest, the Counter Terrorism Investigation Group conducted further searches at a separate address in Maryborough.During these searches, police allegedly seized electronic devices containing violent and extremist material.

Authorities later stated that the boy had also made threats directed at a local school, prompting the escalation of the investigation into potential terrorism-related activity.

Police have indicated that further charges are expected, including planning to cause death or grievous bodily harm and possession of violent extremist material.

The case is particularly notable as the teenager is understood to be the first person in Queensland charged under the state’s new anti-hate laws, which were introduced to address extremist behaviour and related threats. The boy is scheduled to appear before the Hervey Bay Children’s Court later this week.Investigations remain ongoing as authorities assess the extent of the alleged material and any broader risks.

Police have not released further details about the school involved or the nature of the alleged planning, citing the sensitivity of the matter and the age of the accused.
