18-year-old Sri Lankan Tamil woman killed in alleged gang-related road rage attack on Chennai’s Koyambedu flyover

An 18-year-old Sri Lankan Tamil woman, Yancy, was killed in a violent incident on the Koyambedu flyover in Chennai on Saturday night after a group of men allegedly turned a personal altercation into a fatal road rage attack.

According to police reports, Yancy, who had recently come to stay with a friend in Chennai, had visited a private bar in the Koyambedu area along with a minor girl. While they were inside the bar, they reportedly got into a quarrel with a six-member group.Security personnel at the establishment intervened and asked both parties to leave. The situation escalated outside the bar, where the gang allegedly assaulted Yancy and the group before leaving the spot.Police said that the accused later waited in an SUV and deliberately targeted the two-wheeler in which Yancy and the minor girl were travelling home. The SUV rammed into their vehicle on the flyover, resulting in Yancy sustaining severe head injuries and dying on the spot. The minor girl suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital by passers-by.Initially, the case was registered as a road accident, but it was later reclassified as murder after CCTV footage review.Police have arrested multiple suspects linked to the incident, including the alleged driver of the SUV, while one more person remains absconding.Authorities are also investigating how the minor was allowed into the bar and examining the sequence of events leading to the fatal attack.
