ACOG Releases Independent Vaccine Guidance for Pregnant, Postpartum, and Breastfeeding Women

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), one of the leading professional organizations representing obstetricians and gynecologists in the United States, has issued its own vaccine recommendations for pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women. This marks the first time the organization has formally published an independent immunization schedule. The move comes after recent changes to federal vaccine guidance under the Trump administration and Health Secretary Robert F.Kennedy Jr.

, which prompted concerns among medical professionals and led ACOG to withdraw from a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) vaccine advisory committee earlier in the year.

According to ACOG officials, the new recommendations are intended to provide clear, evidence-based guidance and to counter what the organization describes as increasing vaccine misinformation. The schedule aligns with vaccine recommendations that were previously supported by the CDC before the recent policy changes.

ACOG’s guidance has also received endorsements from 13 other professional and medical organizations, highlighting broad support within the medical community. The recommendations include four routine vaccinations during pregnancy.

These include the seasonal influenza vaccine, which can be administered during any trimester and is ideally received in early fall; the COVID-19 vaccine, which can also be given during any trimester and is recommended as soon as possible during pregnancy; and the Tdap vaccine, which protects against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis and is preferably administered between 27 and 36 weeks of pregnancy.

The article notes that other medical organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, have also published vaccine guidance that differs from current CDC recommendations.

ACOG says its goal is to help patients and healthcare providers make informed decisions based on scientific evidence and established maternal health practices.
