AFP Defends Teodoro and Rejects China's Sanctions as Political Intimidation

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) expressed strong support for Defense Secretary Gilbert 'Gibo' Teodoro Jr.after China imposed sanctions on him and members of his family.

China announced that Teodoro, his wife, and his child are prohibited from entering mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau, claiming that the Philippine official had made remarks that harmed China's interests and bilateral relations. However, Chinese authorities did not specify which statements prompted the sanctions.

In response, the AFP said Teodoro's remarks in international forums, including the Shangri-La Dialogue, accurately reflected international law, the 2016 arbitral ruling on the South China Sea, and the sovereign rights of the Filipino people.

The military described the sanctions as an attempt at political intimidation aimed at silencing individuals who speak out against what it called coercive and illegal actions in the Philippines' exclusive economic zone.

The AFP emphasized that foreign pressure and personal sanctions would not affect its commitment to defend Philippine territory and sovereign rights, particularly in the West Philippine Sea.It stated that maritime and aerial patrols, as well as efforts to protect Filipino fishermen, would continue.Teodoro likewise said he would continue performing his duties despite the sanctions.

The Department of Foreign Affairs noted that while China has the sovereign authority to impose such measures, it believes the decision was inappropriate.

The Stratbase Institute also criticized the sanctions, describing them as an unacceptable attempt to target a Philippine official for defending national interests.

The organization urged Filipinos and the government to remain firm in protecting the country's rights under international law and strengthening cooperation with like-minded nations.

The report also recalled China's previous travel ban against former senator Francis Tolentino over his involvement in maritime legislation related to Philippine sovereignty.
