Nevnina Onyango, the widow of Albert Ojwang, expressed deep grief after prosecutors presented their opening statement in the High Court murder case involving six police officers, including former Central Police Station OCS Samson Talaam.

According to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Ojwang was alive and in good physical condition when he was taken into police custody, but he was found dead the following morning.

The prosecution argued that the accused officers acted together in an unlawful assault that resulted in his death before allegedly attempting to conceal what had happened.

The DPP said the case will rely on testimony from Ojwang's family, the officers who transported him to the station, and the pathologist who carried out the post-mortem examination.

Medical findings reportedly show injuries that do not match the earlier police explanation that Ojwang died after hitting his head against a wall, instead suggesting he was deliberately assaulted.

Prosecutors also plan to present CCTV evidence and forensic expert testimony to reconstruct Ojwang's movements inside the station and to demonstrate alleged interference with surveillance footage after his death.

Following the court proceedings, Nevnina shared an emotional message on social media asking whether she would ever truly heal, drawing messages of comfort and encouragement from many Kenyans.The article also notes that all six accused officers have denied the murder charges.

Separately, it recalls that Ojwang's family later fulfilled Luo tradition by paying bride price for Nevnina after his death, honouring the commitment he had made during his lifetime.
