Amazon MGM Drops Release Plans for Luca Guadagnino’s OpenAI-Themed Film ‘Artificial’

Amazon MGM Studios has decided not to release 'Artificial,' an upcoming film directed by Luca Guadagnino that focuses on the 2023 leadership crisis at OpenAI.

The movie, which stars Andrew Garfield as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, is reportedly near completion and is now being offered to other studios for distribution.Amazon stated that it continues to respect Guadagnino and believes the project would be better served by another distributor.

The film is described as a comedic drama centered on the events surrounding Altman’s brief removal from OpenAI in 2023 and his return just four days later after a power struggle involving the company’s board, employees, and major partners. The cast also includes portrayals of several prominent technology figures, including Elon Musk, Mira Murati, and Ilya Sutskever.

Reports from industry sources suggest that the final version of the film became significantly darker in tone than originally planned, with Altman and Musk depicted in an unsympathetic manner.

The decision by Amazon MGM has attracted attention because it comes months after Amazon announced a major strategic partnership with OpenAI worth up to $50 billion, including cloud infrastructure agreements through AWS.Additional reports note that Altman and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos have a personal relationship. However, no evidence has been presented that either Amazon’s investment in OpenAI or Bezos’ connection to Altman influenced the studio’s decision. As a result, the film’s producers are now seeking a new distributor ahead of its planned release.
