Andrea Johnson Resigns as Idac Head Amid Allegations and Institutional Concerns

Advocate Andrea Johnson, head of the Independent Directorate Against Corruption (Idac), has submitted her resignation to the national director of public prosecutions (NDPP), Andy Mothibi, and President Cyril Ramaphosa.

In her letter, Johnson cited unprecedented personal and professional attacks over the past five months, particularly regarding cases against crime intelligence officials. She highlighted the negative attention her role has drawn, including scrutiny from the Madlanga commission where she is testifying.Johnson emphasized her 30 years of service to Idac and the NPA, stating she cannot be the reason for reputational risks to these institutions.

She requested immediate release from office, waiving the standard three-month notice period, citing precedents where colleagues were allowed to resign without notice. The NPA confirmed receipt of her resignation, with Mothibi processing it.

Johnson noted that allegations against her remain unproven and would require a costly commission, referencing the Andrew Chauke case which similarly led to scrutiny and financial burden.

Despite potential challenges to her resignation, Johnson expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and urged the NPA and Idac to prioritize institutional integrity.
