Advocate Andrea Johnson, head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), has requested immediate resignation from her position, waiving her contractual three-month notice period.

Her decision follows intense scrutiny at the Madlanga Commission, where she faced allegations related to IDAC's investigations into senior Crime Intelligence officials.

Johnson cited unprecedented attacks on her personal and professional integrity as the primary reason for her exit, linking it directly to the fallout from cases against Crime Intelligence officers.She emphasized that the negative attention jeopardized IDAC's reputation and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Despite denying wrongdoing, Johnson acknowledged some errors in her previous testimony and faced allegations of leaking information to a senior Crime Intelligence officer, Major-General Feroz Khan.

The controversy comes after IDAC led the arrest of Crime Intelligence head Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo in 2025, which sparked debates over political motives versus evidence-driven investigations.Johnson's resignation marks a significant shift for IDAC, which was recently granted permanence and renamed.Her career spans three decades, including roles at the Scorpions and as head of IDAC since 2022.The situation highlights ongoing tensions within South Africa's anti-corruption framework.
