Advocate Andrea Johnson, head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), has resigned from her post, citing sustained attacks on her and the controversy surrounding her leadership as a reputational risk to the anti-corruption unit and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

In a letter to National Director of Public Prosecutions Andy Mothibi and President Cyril Ramaphosa, Johnson requested immediate release from office, waiving her three-month notice period.

She emphasized that the past five months had been marked by unprecedented personal and professional attacks, particularly linked to IDAC's investigations into South African Police Service officials.

Johnson acknowledged unproven allegations against her but argued that further inquiries would be costly and time-consuming, stressing that South Africa cannot afford another commission amid FATF scrutiny.She also revealed her intention to retire at 55 but feared legal challenges over her resignation.The controversy stems from her testimony before the Madlanga Commission, where she faced scrutiny over IDAC's investigations and her conduct.Complaints against Johnson have been received by the IDAC Oversight Judge, though no findings of wrongdoing have been made.Legal experts warn the controversy risks undermining public confidence in anti-corruption institutions.The Presidency and NPA have not yet confirmed Johnson's request for immediate release.
