Andrew Chauke Reinstated as Director of Public Prosecutions After Inquiry

South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andrew Chauke, has been reinstated after a year-long suspension following an inquiry into allegations of misconduct. The inquiry, led by retired Constitutional Court Justice Baaitse Nkabinde, concluded that Chauke is fit to hold office.

His suspension, which began in July 2025, followed a request by former National Director of Public Prosecutions Shamila Batohi to investigate his handling of State Capture-related cases.

Critics accused Chauke of delaying or obstructing high-profile corruption investigations, including those involving Prasa, former Health MEC Brian Hlongwa, and Crime Intelligence boss Richard Mdluli.

The inquiry examined allegations of political bias, weak evidence in prosecutions, and potential overreach in cases like the Johan Booysen racketeering charges. While Batohi claimed Chauke acted politically, Chauke denied the allegations.

The report, handed to President Cyril Ramaphosa in early 2026, marks the end of a contentious period for the NPA, with ongoing scrutiny over its role in combating corruption.
