The death toll from the building collapse in Barangay Balibago, Angeles City, Pampanga has risen to nine, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) as of May 31, 2026.The incident occurred on May 24, when a structure suddenly collapsed, trapping numerous individuals inside.

Authorities initially estimated that between 30 to 40 people may have been trapped, while rescue teams have so far successfully saved 26 individuals from the debris.Despite ongoing operations, at least 14 people remain missing, raising concerns that the final casualty count may still increase.

Emergency responders, including personnel from the BFP and other government agencies, continue clearing operations at the site, although progress has been reported to be slow, with officials stating that only about five percent of the debris has been cleared.The complexity of the collapsed structure and safety risks have contributed to the slow pace of recovery efforts.

In parallel, authorities have launched a formal investigation into the cause of the collapse, with local government officials ordering a fact-finding probe to determine possible violations of building safety standards.

The Philippine National Police has also confirmed its involvement in the investigation, particularly in examining whether negligence or regulatory breaches contributed to the disaster.

Meanwhile, representatives of the building owner and contractor have reportedly provided financial assistance to some victims, although not all affected families have accepted aid.

As search, rescue, and clearing operations continue, officials emphasize that identifying all victims and determining accountability remain top priorities in the ongoing response to the tragedy.
