Western Kenya Leaders Encourage Edwin Sifuna to Take Prominent Leadership Role Ahead of 2027 Elections
NLP leader Augustus Kyalo Muli has publicly urged Wiper Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka to rally Ukambani leaders into a united political and development front ahead of the 2027 general elections in Kenya.
In an open letter, Muli dismissed claims that he is acting as a proxy for President William Ruto or any other political figure, insisting that his allegiance is solely to the Kamba community. He described himself as an “insurance policy” for Ukambani, calling for unity among regional leaders to strengthen their bargaining power nationally.
Muli warned that the region’s political fragmentation has historically weakened its influence, arguing that Ukambani’s estimated two million votes are often dispersed and used to support larger national coalitions without yielding meaningful development returns.
He referenced past elections, stating that despite delivering strong voter support in 1997, 2013, 2017, and 2022, the region has continued to face persistent challenges such as stalled infrastructure projects, poverty, and unfulfilled promises.
He proposed the formation of a “Ukambani Unity Pact 2027,” which would aim to consolidate votes and expand political alliances to create a potential five-million vote bloc.According to him, this bloc could include diaspora communities, allies from Lower Eastern Kenya, and other marginalised groups.
He also suggested a structured nine-member council comprising representatives from political parties, elders, youth, women, clergy, professionals, and diaspora members to ensure transparency and prevent secret political deals.
Muli further emphasised the need for a shared development agenda focusing on water, roads, irrigation, jobs, and markets, with clearly costed and time-bound projects.
He also referenced former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s political remarks about vote strength, arguing that unity would allow Ukambani to negotiate from a position of power.Overall, his message centred on transforming Ukambani from a fragmented voting bloc into a coordinated political force ahead of the 2027 elections.
