Australia extends temporary fuel stockholding relief amid global supply uncertainty

Australia’s Energy Minister Chris Bowen has announced the extension of temporary fuel flexibility measures designed to support supply stability amid ongoing global market pressures.

Speaking in Sydney, Bowen confirmed that the Federal Government will extend a 20 per cent reduction in minimum fuel stockholding obligations for fuel companies until September.

The policy, initially scheduled to end in July, was introduced to allow suppliers greater operational flexibility and to help address distribution issues, particularly in regional areas.Bowen stressed that the decision should not be interpreted as a signal of imminent fuel shortages. He pointed to current data showing Australia holds its strongest petrol reserves since minimum stock obligations were introduced in 2023.According to the Minister, Australia currently has around 48 days of petrol supply on hand, alongside 36 days of diesel and 30 days of jet fuel.He also noted that 46 fuel ships are currently en route to the country and that contracts are in place for approximately 3.3 billion litres of fuel deliveries over the next four weeks.

The government also announced an additional 40 million litre diesel shipment, arranged through Export Finance Australia and Freedom Fuels, aimed at strengthening supply buffers for regional Queensland and other regional areas. The shipment is expected to arrive in Brisbane in June.

While acknowledging ongoing instability in global energy markets, including disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, Bowen emphasised that Australia’s fuel system remains secure through at least June and July, with some supply agreements extending into August. He added that collaboration between government and industry has helped prevent shortages previously predicted by commentators.

The extension reflects a cautious approach by Canberra, balancing reassurance to consumers with preparedness for potential international supply disruptions.
