Wildfires burning near Clinton, British Columbia, have caused significant disruptions to the provincial power grid, leading to flickering lights and outages for thousands of BC Hydro customers.

According to Bob Gammer, BC Hydro's community relations coordinator, ash and smoke from the fires have coated major transmission lines in the Southern Interior region, which is critical to the province's energy infrastructure.

Gammer explained that crews cannot safely access these lines due to the soot and ash buildup, and while redundancy measures are typically in place for such situations, the scale of this crisis makes it impossible to implement workarounds for the high-voltage 500,000-volt transmission lines.

The fires have also prompted widespread evacuation orders, with the entire Village of Clinton placed under an emergency order after the Pear Lake fire advanced rapidly toward the community.Over 20 structures have been destroyed in the Big Bar Lake area as part of the larger Big Bar complex wildfires.Authorities warn that hot and dry conditions are fueling the fires, which continue to expand evacuation zones across the region.The situation highlights the growing threat of climate-driven wildfires and their cascading impacts on both human safety and critical infrastructure.
