Bilawal proposes high-powered Truth and Reconciliation Commission to address unrest in AJK

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has called for the establishment of a high-powered commission with full authority to investigate the recent unrest in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) in accordance with the state's laws.

Speaking at a gathering of PPP leaders and ticket holders in Muzaffarabad ahead of the July 27 Legislative Assembly elections, he described the situation in AJK as a matter of concern for both Kashmiris and all Pakistanis.Bilawal urged politicians, protesters and all stakeholders to exercise restraint, avoid inflammatory language and work towards restoring peace.

He stressed that the Pakistan Armed Forces are a red line for the PPP and said the party would not tolerate anti-state narratives or statements directed against the military.

At the same time, he emphasised that disrespectful remarks against Kashmiris were equally unacceptable and that commitments made to the people of Kashmir must be honoured.

Bilawal maintained that constitutional amendments could not be imposed through sit-ins, violence or the use of force, warning against allowing extremist politics to take hold in the region.

Responding to a letter from the banned Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), he expressed sorrow over the recent loss of lives, saying every Kashmiri, police officer and security official deserved equal protection.

He proposed a Truth and Reconciliation Commission formed with the consent of all stakeholders to investigate events, rebuild public trust and recommend a fair and lasting solution.

He also appealed to the JAAC to suspend its planned protests if such a commission was established and urged the authorities to avoid further escalation during its proceedings.

Bilawal further reiterated support for protecting the voting rights of refugees, reaffirmed Pakistan's position on Kashmir, criticised any move against the Indus Waters Treaty, and praised Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir's role in promoting regional peace and stability.
