Dr Praveena Sukhraj-Ely, a blind advocate with expertise in disability rights, governance, and constitutional law, has been appointed as acting director general of the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities.This appointment, announced by Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, marks a significant step towards inclusive leadership in South Africa.

Sukhraj-Ely, who holds a PhD in Public Policy and a Master's in Political Science, has a proven track record in advancing inclusive governance, human rights, and policies addressing Gender-Based Violence and Femicide.

Her role includes advocating for 7% employment of persons with disabilities by 2030 and representing South Africa internationally on disability rights.

The appointment underscores the government's commitment to equality and inclusive leadership, with Chikunga commending her legal expertise and dedication to advancing rights for marginalized groups.

The International Council for Education of People with Visual Impairment praised her appointment as a testament to her leadership and commitment to building an inclusive society.
