A Sydney woman found love with a restaurant owner after a chance meeting at a friend’s birthday event
Ailsa, a 31-year-old systems engineer, and Mike, a 35-year-old paralegal, met for a blind date dinner in London at Chargal in W1 as part of a social dating column. Both arrived early and initially noted a sense of ease in the setting, though their expectations differed slightly.Ailsa hoped for good conversation and a bit of fun, while Mike was looking forward to engaging company and an interesting evening.Throughout the dinner, the pair discussed a range of topics including family backgrounds, work, travel experiences and cultural interests.
Ailsa brought energetic enthusiasm to the conversation and expressed a strong passion for live music, while Mike admitted he was less invested in that scene. They also shared light humour, including jokes about indie music and a reference to popular British comedy.
Despite polite engagement and good table manners from both sides, there were moments where conversation naturally stalled, leading to brief awkward pauses.
One of the more uncomfortable moments noted by Mike was learning that Ailsa’s father had helped arrange the date, while Ailsa recalled an awkward ending where Mike attempted a handshake as she went in for a hug.Neither participant felt a strong romantic connection.
Ailsa rated the evening an 8 out of 10, appreciating Mike’s stories and life experience, while Mike gave it a 7, describing it as a decent but non-romantic evening with someone quite different from himself.
Both agreed there was no kiss and no continuation of the date afterwards, and each concluded that while the experience was pleasant, it did not lead to a desire for a second meeting.
